Purpose Driven Church Conference at Saddleback Church (5/14~5/17
2002)
This the church entrance. It reminds me one family resort in Florida. The
senior pastor for this church is Rick Warren and average weekly service
attendants are around 15,000 and church is located in a huge campus and
has around 5000 parking space. They say "if you can't park seekers
you can't reach them". I don't want to mention the size of the church
and the number of people but honestly that was my first impression and a
kind of shock. A purpose driven
church.
Around 5000 people are registered in this conference and half of them are
senior pastors and rest of them are ray minister or all kinds of church
leaders. Two big Screen on side and 3 smaller one in the middle. This is a
worship center. The most contemporary church in 21 century. The worship
was awesome and overwhelming not because of great band or system but
because it was full of hearts and passion and desperation that seeking for
God.
This is lunch time. In California we can do many things out side. The
church doesn't have any indoor place to hold 5000 people except worship
center but food is not allowed inside. 5000 lunch boxes every day and snacks
and drinks every break time. It wouldn't be possible if there were no 500
volunteers for this conference. You may know the similar story around 2000
years ago with 5 loaves and 2 fish. Doesn't it look like that?
This is a saddleback orchestra and choir. It was awesome. People say it is
possible because the church is big enough to have many people with talents
and gifts. I would say it is possible because there was one person who has
a heart and passion to glorify God with praise and I call that person,
"Purpose Driven Leader"
They are all choir members, I took two workshop classes. One of them was
"Using information technology for Purpose Driven Church". You
can guess how much I was excited about this topic and I leaned a lot. And
the other one is "Building a worship team from the scratch".
There was a time that this beautiful choir was a scratch. Nothing can be
built without scratch
This is the man, Worship Leader, Rick Muchow. He is a worship pastor and
leader of encouraging music, www.encouragingmusic.com
He composes worship music specific for seekers and published 8CDs. We had
a worship concert on Thursday night and I was so impressed when he sang
one song in Korean. It was called "Don't give up". Not many
people could understand what he sang but we all know we can praise God
with all kinds of music and all kinds of languages
She is a main vocal in S.O.S. (Sound of Saddleback). What a beautiful
voice she has! I was amazed when she sang "Breathe". She
stopped my breathing. I bought 4CDs after that. I regret that I couldn't
take a picture with her.
You are looking at the "Purpose Driven Disciple". What I found
from saddleback is not the great program or style. What I found were
persons who know God has a wonderful plan in their life and persons who
have committed their life for that purpose. I thought I had a purpose in
my life and I was so busy with that purpose, but maybe it was my purpose
not His. I am still not clear what purpose He has for me. But maybe I am
getting closer to that. My question is, once I found that purpose,
"Am I ready to surrender to that purpose?". I can't answer this
question easily. Maybe that's my homework after the conference. Thanks God
for wonderful time
